Navarro Convicted of Contempt of Congress

Sentencing Follows January 6th Committee Subpoena Defiance

Peter Navarro, a former trade adviser to former President Donald Trump, was sentenced to four months in prison on Thursday for contempt of Congress. The conviction stems from Navarro's refusal to cooperate with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

Navarro, who served as an economic adviser to Trump, was subpoenaed by the committee in February 2022. He defied the subpoena, arguing that the committee lacked legitimate authority and that his testimony would violate executive privilege.

The Justice Department indicted Navarro on two counts of contempt of Congress in March 2022. A jury found him guilty on both counts in November 2022.

In a statement following the sentencing, the House Select Committee said that Navarro's conviction "demonstrates that no one is above the law." The committee also said that it will continue to hold accountable those who defy its subpoenas or obstruct its investigation.

Navarro's sentencing sends a clear message that individuals cannot defy congressional subpoenas with impunity. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability for those who played a role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
