Bocavirus: A Common Respiratory Infection in Children
Understanding Bocavirus
Bocavirus is a newly identified pathogen that can cause upper and lower respiratory infections, usually in children. It belongs to the genus Bocaparvovirus of the virus family Parvoviridae.
Symptoms and Signs
Symptoms of bocavirus infection include cough, respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, and the common cold. The symptomatic disease primarily affects young children between the ages of 6 and 24 months.
Pathogenic Role
By comparing signs and symptoms between HBoV-1 single infections and HBoV-1 co-infections, researchers have gained a clearer understanding of its pathogenic role. The virus can cause both upper and lower respiratory tract infections.
Prevalence
Bocavirus can also infect adults, but they seem to experience less severe symptoms. It is a common respiratory infection, particularly among young children.
