The Evolution of Superhero Teams: From the Justice League to the Avengers
The Birth of the Justice League
The Justice League, one of the most iconic superhero teams in history, was officially founded during the Silver Age of comics in 1960. The team was comprised of seven members: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Aquaman. The Justice League was created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, and their first appearance was in The Brave and the Bold #28. The team's mission was to protect the world from evil and to fight against injustice.
The Justice Society and the Legacy of Superhero Teams
The Justice League was not the first superhero team, however. The Justice Society of America (JSA) was founded in 1940 and was the first team to feature superheroes from different publishers. The JSA consisted of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. The JSA was created by Gardner Fox and Sheldon Moldoff, and their first appearance was in All-Star Comics #3.
The JSA and the Justice League are both considered to be the forefathers of the modern superhero team. These teams paved the way for the creation of other iconic teams such as the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four.
