Chelsea Manning, Former Intelligence Analyst, Released from Prison
Whistleblower to Return to Civilian Life
Chelsea Elizabeth Manning, born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987, is an American activist and whistleblower. A former United States Army intelligence analyst, Manning delivered hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic records to the website WikiLeaks in 2010.
Chelsea Manning has left a military prison in Kansas and returned to civilian life Wednesday, seven years after her arrest.
Manning provided WikiLeaks with hundreds of thousands of sensitive military and diplomatic documents while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2010. She was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to 35 years in prison for espionage, theft, and computer fraud charges. In 2017, her sentence was commuted by President Barack Obama.
Since her release, Manning has become an outspoken advocate for freedom of speech and transparency in government. She has worked with several organizations that support whistleblowers and has spoken out against the use of government surveillance programs.
