Avalanches: A Force of Nature
Causes and Triggers
Avalanches are rapid, destructive flows of snow and ice that thunder down mountainsides. While earthquakes and ice failure can initiate these events, the primary driving force is new snowfall, wind, or other triggers that overcome the stability of the snowpack.Natural Triggers
Earthquakes can shake loose entire mountainsides of snow and ice, creating massive avalanches. Similarly, the failure of mountain slopes coated in thick ice and snow can lead to catastrophic flows. However, the most common natural triggers are new snowfall and wind, which increase the weight and instability of the snowpack, making it more susceptible to failure.
Human-Induced Factors
While landslides are considered natural disasters, human-induced changes in the environment have recently caused their upsurge. Deforestation, mining, and construction activities can alter slopes and remove vegetation that stabilizes the soil. Climate change is also a major contributor, leading to increased frequency and severity of landslides due to thawing permafrost, increased rainfall, and wildfires.
